Summer outside at mac – music, comedy, performance and epic soundtrack cinema

Audiences will be spoilt for choice this summer as mac Birmingham hosts an array of events in its outdoor arena* this summer.

This year’s cinema offering includes Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit and rock mockumentary: This Is Spinal Tap and families can also enjoy comedy and circus from across the world plus contemporary and classic theatre with a twist. mac has also added some pocket money shows – priced at £3.50 and kindly supported by the players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The season begins from 15 July – 3 September 2017.

mac’s Sundown Cinema is leading with a season of epic soundtrack fims, alongside gospel inspired Sister Act 2 (Fri 18 Aug) and rock classic This is Spinal Tap (Fri 25 Aug), audiences can enjoy timeless classic Singin in the Rain (Fri 11 Aug) and Wilson Phillips homage and girlfriend rivalries in Bridesmaid (Fri 1 Sep) – enjoy filmed related cocktails/mocktails as well as a wedding disco and Guitar Hero fun in our bar! Fancy dress optional but encouraged.

Oddsocks cheeky take on Shakespeare returns with a Steampunk musical adaptation of Macbeth (Sun 16 Jul) and a Mods and Rockers inspired Romeo and Juliet (Sat 15 Jul). Expect singalong pop songs and audience participation. A new adaptation of J M Barrie’s Peter Pan (Sat 26 Aug), is presented by Chapterhouse Theatre and award winning writer Laura Turner – join Peter and his friends for what promises to be a magical summer evening.

Hailing direct from Rajasthan, India, Circus Raj’s (Sun 6 Aug) cast of dancers, illusionists, aerialists, acrobats and rope walkers present a colourful, vibrant, fast moving extravaganza of intrigue, music, laughter and surprise. Performed as part of a selection of £3.50 shows, kindly supported by the players of People’s Postcode Lottery, the season also includes a music and sound exploration show for 0-4 year olds entitled: Summer Sounds (Thu 10 Aug) and an animal adventure using puppets, slapstick comedy and music to reveal the mysteries of the animal kingdom in Curious Creatures (Thu 27 July).

Continuing the theme of comedy and music – adults can enjoy Upfront Comedy’s (Sat 5 Aug) yearly outdoor joke fest with acts including host and creator John Simmit and American comedian Tameka Campbell.

Electro swing aficionados and those who just enjoy energetic Balkan beats can enjoy Summer Swing Circus (Sun 23 Jul) – the line-up includes, 6-piece band Electric Swing Circus – expect electronica, house and rock ‘n’ roll.

The season ends with a bite-sized Brazillian carnival, a taster of all things Latin, lively and lush at Oya Batucada: Festa Brasiliana (Sun 3 Sep). Dance like a carnival queen, drum like a sambista and make a headress at mac’s wide range of workshops on the day, concluded with an afternoon performance from local Samba band, Oya Batucada and special guest, The Bandidos.
